Larger organizations will have tools in place to monitor the health of their technology. Its a good idea for smaller organizations to schedule time once a month to check the health of their computers.
Here are some items you should check regularly on all of your computers.
1. Software Updates & Patches.
Check for and install any pending system updates for Windows/macOS/Linux.
Ensure all business-critical software (CRM, accounting, communication tools, etc.) are up-to-date.
Review and apply any security patches for both OS and third-party software.
2. Antivirus & Malware Protection.
Perform a full system scan to check for malware, viruses, and other threats.
Ensure the antivirus software’s virus definitions are up-to-date.
Review and ensure your firewall is active and correctly configured.
3. Security & Access Control.
Ensure that only authorized users have access to sensitive information.
Remove accounts for employees who have left the company.
4. Network & Internet Security.
Ensure your router/firewall is functioning properly and check for firmware updates.
Test internet connection speed to ensure adequate bandwidth for operations.
5. Hardware Check.
Check computers, monitors, printers, and other hardware for any visible issues (e.g., wear, damage, overheating).
Dust off and clean computers, monitors, keyboards, and other devices to prevent overheating and maintain performance.
Test printers, scanners, and other peripherals to ensure they’re working properly.
6. Business Software and Tools.
Verify that software licenses and subscriptions are active and renew before expiration.
